Alumna Named Area Agency on Aging Director

In February 2014 Julie Wiggins was named the new Director of North Carolina’s Region D (High Country) Area Agency on Aging, located in Boone. At the time she was serving as Long Term Care Ombudsman, covering the Region’s seven counties.

Julie earned the Master of Arts degree in Gerontology in 2009 from Appalachian State University, conducting her internship with the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. She was inducted into the Cratis Williams Society, which honors the top 10-20 graduate students annually at ASU, and served as Student Representative to the Southern Gerontological Society in 2008-09.

Prior to that, Julie received her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from ASU, concentrating in Family Development and minoring in Business and French. Before coming back to the High Country, Julie worked in Raleigh as a Disability Examiner for Social Security’s Disability Program. She is “enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve the High Country’s older adults in a new capacity.”
