The amended rental textbook policy passed by the Faculty Senate on October 8, 2007 and implemented by the Provost allows individual departments to establish additional policies in some areas. Beginning July 1, 2008, the following departmental additions to Appalachian State University's existing Policy for Faculty Selection of Textbooks and Other Educational Materials will become the policies of the Department of Sociology. Upon expiration of existing rental textbook agreements and within the established dates set by the bookstore:
- Instructors of single-section courses will make a two-year rental textbook recommendation, as defined in the university policy, to the Department Chair. Upon approval, the Chair will forward the instructor's recommendation to the bookstore.
- In courses with multiple sections, each individual section instructor may make a two-year rental textbook recommendation, as defined in the university policy, to the Department Chair. Upon approval, the Chair will forward each instructor's recommendation to the bookstore.
- All additional purchased materials, including supplemental textbooks, must be approved by the Chair in consultation with the individual instructor. At a minimum, instructors are expected to provide written justification for the use of all supplemental materials.
