Dr. Lorin A. Baumhover earned his PhD in Sociology from Colorado State University in 1976. Prior to joining Appalachian State University in 1966 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, Dr. Baumhover was Professor of Behavioral and Community Medicine and the Director of the Center for the Study of Aging at the University of Alabama.
Among his many achievements while at Appalachian State University, Dr. Baumhover also served as Interim Dean of the Graduate School at ASU where he was affectionately known as “Grand Poohbah” and, later as Interim Provost and Chief of Staff to the Chancellor. A renowned scholar in field of Aging, he was a founding member of the Southern Gerontological Society and the Alabama Gerontological Society where he served as president of both organizations. During his career, he also served on a variety of regional and national boards as well as editorial boards for both national and international journals of Aging.
He has served as past Treasurer of the National Committee on Elder Abuse and Neglect, National Treasurer of Sigma Phi Omega, a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, a Fellow in the North Carolina Institute on Aging, and a founding member and Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
