Meet Chavis Sims. As a sociology major with a concentration in criminology and social control, Chavis worked hard to complete his degree and graduated from Appalachian State University in 2013. That same year, Chavis decided to pursue a new path of interest related to sociology and became a certified 7th grade social studies teacher at Shelby Middle School in Shelby, North Carolina. In short order, Chavis was named Teacher of the Month in December of 2013 for his passion and dedication in the classroom.
Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Chavis has also taken on the responsbilities of being an assistant coach in football and wrestling, as well as a coach of the girls' track team. He also serves as the YMCA Black and Hispanic Achievers Coordinator for Cleveland County. This fall Chavis will be returning to Applachian State University to continue his love for learning as he begins his graduate education in School Administration through the Reich College of Education.
