Dr. Thames and co-author, Dr. Robert Perdue, published a research article in the Journal of Drug Issues focusing on novel drug use. Particularly, Thames and Perdue discussed whether big data derived from using Google Trends as a data source could assist in predicting novel drug use. What they find that despite Google Trends limitations, it “appears to be a promising complement to existing data, providing real-time data that may allow us to predict drug abuse trends and respond more quickly.” The article is titled, “Can Big Data Predict the Rise of Novel Drug Abuse?”
