Welcoming New Faculty! Dr. Ellen Lamont

The Department of Sociology to proud to welcome and introduce one of our new tenure-track faculty members, Dr. Ellen Lamont. Dr. Lamont received her Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University, an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Her current research examines dating and courtship behaviors, looking at how college-educated women and men manage the tension between traditional rituals and the changing social, cultural, and economic contexts that make egalitarian relationships possible.

Ellen’s teaching interests include gender and families and she spent the last year and a half teaching families and women and social policy at Sonoma State University. She encourages high participation rates in her classes to help students think through the course topics and discuss and challenge commonly-held beliefs about the social world. As a brand new transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area, Ellen looks forward to exploring the area with her 5 year-old son, Andrew, who has already declared Boone to be “the best town in the world.”
