Martha McCaughey was on the faculty at Appalachian State from 2003-2022. She taught classes such as Constructions of Gender, Intimate Relationships, Bodies & Sexualities, and special topics such as Life Politics and Living in the Digital Age. McCaughey's academic articles appear in Violence Against Women, Sex Roles, Trauma, Violence & Abuse, and Sexuality & Culture, and her books include The Caveman Mystique: Pop-Darwinism and the Debates Over Sex, Violence, and Science, Cyberactivism, Cyberactivism on the Participatory Web, and Real Knockouts: The Physical Feminism of Women's Self-Defense. She is currently writing a book about the purpose of the university.
