W.E.B. Du Bois is often described as a lot of different things; scholar, activist, early founding figure in urban and community sociology, but what he isn't so often recognized as is a rural sociologist. In this talk, Dr. Joseph Jakubek describes how W.E.B. Du Bois is actually the very first rural sociologist in America and how he focused his rural research on social progress and development in rural Black communities at the turn of the 20th century. Du Bois' work in rural communities is just now being recognized in fields such as the sociology of race and ethnicity, community sociology, and rural sociology. Dr. Jakubek will discuss his nationally-recognized research and how it is among the first scholarly attempts to re-cast W.E.B. Du Bois as among the earliest founders of American rural sociology.
