2012 graduate of Appalachian State University and the Department of Sociology, Mia McClure returns to her alma mater to present her take being an anxious black woman in the world today during a pandemic. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Mia McClure, or to her avid listeners as Mia Love Live, is a jack of all trades, blazing the trail as a multi-talented creative and visionary. Mia earned a degree in Sociology with a concentration in Family Development, and see her creative works as a way to bring sociology to the masses. Following college, she went into radio as a part-time personality for Charlotte's own WPEG-Power 98; eventually taking her talents to an internet radio station. Never afraid to explore new creative ventures, Mia debuted her podcast, "Background Music" in 2016, as well as a new music review show entitled "Love from the City with Mia Love" in 2019. In a year when the rest of the world was trudging through the wake of a global pandemic, Mia dug deeper and began shooting her new web series, "So Anxious: An Anxious, Black Narrative,"with the premier episode aired in October 2020. Having wrapped up with the second season of the web series, Ms. Mia Love is currently touring with her on stage production, "This Is My Brain on Anxiety: The Detailed Experience of an Anxious Black Woman." She was recently featured for her performance at the Duke Energy Theater by Charlotte's WBTV news channel. This show, "This is My Brain on Anxiety: The Detailed Experience of an Anxious, BLACK Woman," will be a 5-part creatively, curated production that unravels and reveals the personal and cultural journey of a black woman dealing with anxiety.
Mia's triumphant return and debut at Appalachian State through this exciting performance will occur on October 15, 2021 at 6:30 pm in Valborg Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public but seats are limited due to COVID-19 percautions. Doors to theater will open at 6 pm to admit guests. The Departments of Sociology and Theatre and Dance are co-sponsoring this event; so, come and enjoy a great performance that will give you some perspective on the struggles folks face in today's world of pandemics and high anxiety!
