Albert and Maxine Hughes Scholarship in Sociology
In 1998, the Hughes family established an endowed scholarship in the name of Dr. Albert Hughes. This scholarship recognizes his 30 years of teaching and service to both the Department of Sociology and Appalachian State University. The scholarship provides tuition assistance to rising sociology juniors and seniors who display academic excellence and regular involvement in service or volunteer activities beyond academic accomplishments.
Eligibility: Full-time sociology majors who are rising juniors or seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply. Eligible students will also demonstrate regular involvement in service or volunteer activities in their time at App State.

Ann Louise Page Endowment for Excellence in Sociology
The Ann Louise Page Endowment for Excellence in Sociology was established in 2020 through a generous gift from Dr. Ann Page's estate. The endowment recognizes Dr. Page's longtime contributions to the Department of Sociology, where she taught for more than 30 years until her retirement in 2009. In recognition of Dr. Page's outstanding contributions to research, the endowment provides scholarship awards that recognize research excellence and support research efforts.
The Ann Louise Page Endowment for Excellence in Sociology supports two opportunities for undergraduate sociology majors:
- The Ann Louise Page Scholarship for Undergraduate Research Excellence in Sociology
- Ann Louise Page Fund for Undergraduate Research
Ann Louise Page Scholarship for Undergraduate Research Excellence in Sociology
The Ann Louise Page Scholarship recognizes excellence in sociological research by undergraduate sociology majors.
Awards will be granted to recognize students’ scholarly products and activities. Eligible scholarly products and activities may include but are not limited to the following:
Honors thesis, senior capstone project, research paper written for a 3- or 4000-level sociology course, applied research project, community engagement research project, or independent student research project. Awards may also be made in recognition of scholarly products produced as part of a research assistantship or research-focused internship or independent study.
Eligibility: Full-time sociology majors are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in the fall semester after applying for the scholarship.

Ann Louise Page Fund for Undergraduate Research
Awards will be made to support original sociological research by undergraduate students. Awards may be used to support activities such as but not limited to: interview transcription, data purchase, travel for research, compensation for study participants, conference registration, and other research-related costs.
Application Cycle: Awards from the Ann Louise Page Fund for Undergraduate Research shall be administered on a rolling basis each academic year. Up to $1,000 will be administered annually.
Eligibility: Undergraduate sociology majors will be eligible to receive awards.
How to Apply: Students are to submit a single application via the Department of Sociology’s internal application form, accessible here: https://tinyurl.com/studentpagegrantapp. Required application materials include:
A project description summarizing the project goals, research question, research method(s), and anticipated findings. Students should also describe what the funding will be used for and a timeline for completing the proposed work. The project description should be one-to-two pages single-spaced.
A budget detailing the total amount of requested funding and anticipated costs for itemized expenses.
An info page detailing the following information: student’s year, degree concentration, number of major hours completed, etc., in the format of the department’s Internship Information Sheet.
A letter of recommendation from a relevant faculty mentor. (If a faculty mentor oversees the research in question, the letter should be from them). Letters may come from tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track faculty. The letter should speak to the student’s qualifications for completing the proposed research. The letter should also discuss the merits of the proposed project and the use of funds.
NOTE: Faculty should email letters of recommendation directly to the Student Development Committee.
Janice Rienerth Endowment for Sociology
In 2014, Dr. Rienerth established an endowed scholarship ensure that her passion for civic engagement and higher education are carried forward. The scholarship recognizes her 42 years of teaching and service to the Department, Appalachian State University and the larger community. The scholarship provides tuition assistance to rising sociology seniors who display academic excellence and are pursuing a career in higher education or the nonprofit sector.
Eligibility: Sociology majors who are rising seniors are eligible to apply.
